Preparation goals

The preparation goal is to move from describing a problem to explaining a decision. Candidates should be able to identify the key issue, challenge assumptions and justify a practical response.

For example, a recommendation should make clear why an option suits the organisation and what could change the judgement.

Learning Methodology

Preparation turns technical knowledge into advice for a senior finance manager. First, candidates build an evidence file from the pre-seen organisation, separating facts from assumptions.

  1. Analyse the context: Map stakeholders, strategic priorities and the financial position before considering possible business challenges.
  2. Connect the evidence: Select relevant E3, P3 and F3 concepts, then explain how they affect a decision in the case.
  3. Develop an argument: Compare alternatives, identify trade-offs and support recommendations with commercial reasoning.
  4. Refine communication: Write directly to the task, use clear headings and explain the implications for the organisation.
  5. Review progress: Maintain an error log and revisit weak areas after feedback. Finally, check whether each recommendation follows from the evidence.

Career applications

Strategic case analysis is relevant to finance business partnering, corporate planning, risk oversight and financial decision support. These functions involve explaining options to leaders and assessing how decisions affect value.

For example, a finance professional may compare funding choices or challenge assumptions in a growth proposal. Progression depends on practical experience, responsibilities and employer requirements; completing preparation does not guarantee a role or salary.
