The Operational Case Study applies CIMA knowledge and skills to realistic business scenarios, assessing learners' ability to analyze information, make decisions, and provide practical business solutions.
The CIMA Operational Case Study brings E1, P1 and F1 knowledge into a business case. It links digital finance, management accounting and financial reporting. The aim is to use what you know to explain a practical business issue.
First, read the task and identify the decision it asks you to support. Then choose facts from the case that matter to that decision. Finally, give a clear response that connects the evidence with your advice.
E1 helps you consider the finance function, data and the wider business. P1 helps you examine costs, budgets and decisions. F1 helps you interpret financial statements and working capital. In practice, a case may need ideas from more than one subject.
For example, a late customer payment affects cash. It may also raise questions about credit checks, records and staff responsibilities. Therefore, explain both the financial effect and the steps the business could take. A definition alone does not show how to act.
Start by making a short map of the case business. Note what it sells, who its customers are and how it earns cash. Next, identify the people and processes that affect its day-to-day work.
However, the pre-seen is only a starting point. A fresh task may add facts or change an assumption. Read those details before choosing an answer. Then check whether your earlier view still fits.
Use a simple response plan. State the issue, explain the evidence and set out a useful action. In addition, say what information is missing when it affects your conclusion. This makes your reasoning easier to follow.
Suppose a shop holds more stock while cash falls. First, check whether sales have changed. Then compare purchases with demand. Slow stock may tie up cash, but one figure cannot explain the whole problem.
Next, look at supplier terms and customer payments. For example, cash may fall because customers pay late. In that case, buying less stock may help only part of the problem. Therefore, link each proposed action with the cause it addresses.
Finally, explain how the shop could track progress. It might review old stock, overdue debts and cash forecasts. Use the facts in the task to judge which measures matter most. Avoid inventing data that the case has not supplied.
The listed lecture plan contains ten sessions. First, build the business context. Then apply each Operational subject and practise integrated responses. Finally, use timed tasks and revision to review your reasoning.
| Sessions | Focus | Practice goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Case study and business context | Read the pre-seen and map key issues. |
| 2–4 | P1, F1 and E1 application | Connect subject knowledge with business facts. |
| 5–7 | Decisions, risk and communication | Explain a practical response with clear reasons. |
| 8–10 | Integrated cases, timed practice and revision | Review evidence, structure and time use. |
After each practice task, compare your answer with the question. Did you address the issue asked? Did you explain why your action fits? Next, keep a short record of errors and revisit the weak areas.
For example, separate a knowledge gap from a rushed reading error. Each needs a different response. Finally, confirm your eligibility, assessment arrangements and current exam guidance with CIMA before booking.

First, apply E1, P1 and F1 to the issue in the case. Then explain the evidence and the action it supports. Finally, review whether your response is clear, relevant and practical. Use timed practice to improve planning and communication.

Operational case preparation encourages a clear explanation of a day-to-day business issue. It can help a developing finance professional connect data with the practical steps needed by an operational team.
For example, explain the evidence behind a concern, the likely consequences and a workable response. The value is in the reasoning and communication; a case-study result alone does not establish professional membership.
After successfully completing the Operational Case Study, learners can progress to the CIMA Management level. The next stage includes E2: Managing Performance, P2: Advanced Management Accounting, and F2: Advanced Financial Reporting, followed by the Management Case Study.
After completing the Management level, learners can progress to the Strategic level, covering E3: Strategic Management, P3: Risk Management, and F3: Financial Strategy, followed by the Strategic Case Study and completion of the CIMA Professional Qualification.
You will get a certificate of completion, which is highly reputed and accepted by employers.
