CIMA BA4: Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law

Overview

CIMA BA4 ethics, corporate governance and business law course

CIMA BA4 introduces ethics, corporate governance and business law. It helps learners recognise the issues behind a business choice and explain which principles matter. The subject connects responsible conduct with the way organisations make and review decisions.

First, read the facts and identify the question. Then separate the ethical concern from the legal or governance issue. Finally, explain why your chosen response fits the situation. This keeps the answer focused.

Ethics and professional conduct

Ethics concerns how a person should act when interests or pressures conflict. For example, a colleague may ask you to overlook an error to meet a target. First, clarify what happened. Then consider the people affected and the principles at risk.

A useful answer explains the concern rather than simply calling the choice wrong. In addition, distinguish a fact from an assumption. The case may leave some details unclear. State what you would need to know before reaching a firm conclusion.

Governance and accountability

Governance concerns how an organisation directs and oversees its work. CIMA BA4 links this with board roles, stakeholder interests and internal controls. For example, a weak approval process may let the same person request, approve and record a payment.

Next, explain why a review step matters. It can make responsibility clearer and help a business question a doubtful transaction. However, a control is useful only if people understand and follow it. Therefore, consider both the process and the people using it.

Business law in a study scenario

The course plan covers contracts, agency, employment and business structures. First, identify the relationship involved. Is the question about a customer agreement, an employee or a company decision? Then choose the relevant topic before applying the principles in your study materials.

For example, a contract question may ask you to examine the agreement and the parties’ obligations. Avoid jumping to a remedy before you have identified the issue. Finally, check the facts and the syllabus context used in the question.

CIMA BA4 study roadmap

The listed course plan contains ten sessions. First, build the legal foundations. Then connect ethics and governance with practical business cases. Finally, review the topics through integrated questions.

SessionsStudy areaPractice focus
1–3Contracts, agency, employment and business organisationsIdentify the relationship and the issue being tested.
4–5Company law and governance responsibilitiesExplain roles, oversight and accountability.
6–8Ethics, corporate responsibility, risk and controlsConnect a concern with a reasoned response.
9–10Integrated BA4 application and revisionReview the facts, principles and answer structure.

Practising a reasoned answer

Use a short business example after studying a principle. First, name the issue. Then show which fact makes the principle relevant. Finally, explain the response and its reason. This method helps you move beyond recalling a definition.

For CIMA BA4 revision, keep an error log by topic. For example, record whether you confused a board role, missed a contract fact or chose an ethical response too quickly. Next, revisit that topic with a fresh question.

In addition, compare two plausible answers. Ask which one addresses the actual question and uses the facts supplied. Therefore, review the reasoning behind a correct answer as well as the score. CIMA BA4 preparation works best when the principle and its application stay connected.

Table of contents

Connect the three study areas when reviewing a business choice. For example, a decision can raise an ethical concern as well as a question about oversight. First, identify each issue. Then explain the relevant principles in a clear order.
