CIMA E1: Managing Finance in a Digital World course

Overview

CIMA E1 digital finance and business collaboration

CIMA E1 is the Enterprise subject at Operational level of the CGMA Professional Qualification. In particular, it explores the work of finance teams in a digital world.

First, consider how finance helps a business. Next, connect that role with the data, tools and people involved. For example, a useful report must reach the right person and answer a clear question.

These links help learners explain how finance supports day-to-day business work. Therefore, use the official Operational level guidance to place the subject in the wider qualification.CIMA E1 digital finance study roadmap

First, ask what the finance task should achieve. Then trace the information, technology and team responsibilities it needs. Finally, explain how another business team can use the output.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

The CIMA was founded in 1919. The CIMA head office is located in London, UK.

Members

In 2017, AICPA & CIMA came together to forge a powerful international alliance that promotes accounting and finance in every corner of the world. As of 2025, AICPA & CIMA serve 580,000 members, candidates, and registrants in 150 countries and territories.

Learning purpose

Start with a task and the need it serves. Identify who uses the data and how the team gets it. Next, decide what a person must check or judge.

For example, a new tool may speed up a task but leave poor data unresolved. Explain what must change for the tool to be useful. In addition, consider the people who will use its output.

What is the eligibility?

  • Operational Level entry: E1 Managing Finance in a Digital World is a Professional Qualification subject. The Certificate in Business Accounting provides the standard entry route; CIMA may approve a different starting point through exemptions.
  • Foundational skills: CIMA specifies maths and English skills equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or above for beginning CGMA studies.
  • Exemptions: Submit relevant qualifications and experience for CIMA’s assessment. Therefore, confirm your approved entry point before booking E1.

Course structure

CIMA E1 Syllabus areas

The CIMA E1 syllabus covers five connected areas:

  • Role of the finance function
  • Technology in a digital world
  • Data and information in a digital world
  • Shape and structure of the finance function
  • Finance interacting with the organisation

Together, these areas connect the purpose of finance with the information, systems and working relationships needed to support it. The lecture plan below develops these ideas through practical process questions.

Lecture plan

CIMA E1 preparation follows the ten lessons below. Begin with the finance contribution and the information it uses, then connect those ideas with team responsibilities. Finally, use integrated revision to identify the concepts that still need explanation.

Learning Methodology

Learning CIMA E1 through process questions

Use one work task as a study example. First, follow the data from its source to the person who needs it.

  1. Describe the task and why finance helps.
  2. Map the people, data and tools involved.
  3. Compare two ways to meet the stated need.
  4. Challenge a claim that lacks clear evidence.
  5. Reflect on what changed after feedback.

Finally, try a new example. Explain the idea in your own words to check that you can use it.

CIMA E1 teaching discussions
Lectures

Use teaching time to ask why a finance concept matters at work. For example, trace how a request becomes a report for another team. Discuss the link between each step, then use the lesson plan to track what you have covered.

CIMA E1 scenario practice
Practice Session

Read a short business example and choose the response that fits its stated need. Next, explain why the other choices fit less well. Keep an error log: was the problem a new term, a missed fact or a weak link in your reasoning?

CIMA E1 mock question review
Mock Examination

Use mixed-topic practice to check what you recall and how you apply it. After each attempt, review answers you were unsure about as well as errors. Then plan the next study task. However, a practice score does not replace the CIMA exam or prove that you are ready.

Berkeley Middle East Performance Standards

Review whether an explanation answers the business question rather than merely naming a technology. Use these checks during feedback:

As a result, revision can focus on the reasoning that needs improvement instead of repeating a general claim about confidence.

Career applications

E1 preparation can inform work involving the finance function’s relationship with data, technology and other teams. A practical application is explaining how a finance process supports a wider business objective.

For example, identify where information enters a process, who uses it and what could reduce its reliability. These questions can support a constructive discussion about improving the process.

Career path

Progression Route:

On the objective-test route, E1 sits alongside P1: Management Accounting and F1: Financial Reporting. Once the required Operational subjects are passed or exempted, candidates can progress to the Operational Case Study.

However, completing E1 tuition alone does not complete the Operational level or confer a CIMA award. Confirm your individual progression requirements with CIMA. Use your CIMA E1 preparation to connect finance processes with the wider business situations you will encounter as you continue studying.

What You Earn

Berkeley’s certificate records E1 training completion. CIMA assessment results and awards are separate; this preparation course does not confer CIMA membership.
