Cambridge International AS & A Level Media Studies helps learners explore the role of media in daily life through analysis and hands-on creation. Students produce their own media content while studying industry techniques, technologies, and effects.

Overview

Cambridge International AS and A Level Media Studies offers learners the chance to develop an understanding and appreciation of the place of media in our everyday lives. The syllabus enables learners to take a hands-on approach to the subject. Through the coursework components - the Foundation Portfolio for AS Level and the Advanced Portfolio for A Level - they create their own media products from planning through to execution. Learners also consider and analyse examples from existing media, examining production processes and technologies and the effects they achieve.

Course structure

Performance

Learners will develop technical and expressive skills in performing music. This module focuses on solo and ensemble performance, allowing learners to demonstrate musical proficiency and interpretation.

Composition

Learners will compose original music, exploring various styles and forms. This module encourages creativity and application of musical knowledge in creating both instrumental and vocal compositions.

Listening and Analysis

This course enables learners to develop the ability to analyze and appreciate a variety of music. It focuses on music theory, the analysis of musical forms, and understanding the context and historical significance of different compositions.

Musical Contexts

Learners explore the influence of social, historical, and cultural factors on music. This module encourages students to engage with different music traditions, understanding the evolution of music and its impact on society.

Practical Music Coursework
100 marks
There are two compulsory elements: performing
and composing.
Candidates must complete:
– 6–10 minute performance
– two contrasting compositions, 1–2 minutes
each
Internally assessed and externally moderated.
40% of the AS Level
20% of the A Level

Component 3

Extended Performance Coursework
100 marks
There are two parts to Extended Performance:
– 15–20 minute performance
– 1000–1500-word research report
Externally assessed
25% of the A Level

Component 4

Extended Composition Coursework
100 marks
There are two parts to Extended Composition:
– 6–8 minute composition
– 1000–1500-word research report
