Islamic Studies

The Islamic Studies syllabus helps learners understand Islamic religious writings, history, and current affairs, fostering intelligent discussion. It covers Islam's origins, beliefs, practices, and Islamic law, reflecting on its role today.

Overview

The Islamic Studies syllabus enables learners to gain a better understanding of the religious writings, history and current affairs of Islam. As a result, they are able to think and argue intelligently about the subject. The syllabus is broad and ranges from the beginnings of Islam to the variety of beliefs and practices of Islam and the basis of Islamic law. Learners develop knowledge about aspects of the rich Islamic heritage and reflect on the role played by Islam today.This syllabus replaces and from 2021 onwards. The last examination series for Cambridge International AS Level Islamic Studies (8053) and Cambridge International A Level Islamic Studies (9013) will be November 2020.

Course structure

Islamic Beliefs and Practices

This topic explores the core beliefs in Islam, including belief in one God (Tawhid), the Prophets, the Angels, and the Day of Judgment. It also covers the five pillars of Islam, which guide the practices and daily life of Muslims.

Islamic Law (Shariah) and Its Application

This topic focuses on the principles of Islamic law, including its sources (the Quran and Hadith), and its application in areas such as family law, criminal law, finance, and ethics. 

Heritage of Islam

This section examines the rich cultural and intellectual history of Islam, from its origins in the 7th century to its expansion and contributions to science, philosophy, art, and literature.

Islam in the Modern World

This topic addresses the role and challenges of Islam in contemporary society. It looks at how Islamic teachings are applied in modern contexts, such as politics, education, gender roles, and interfaith relations, and the impact of globalization on Islamic communities.

‣ Full compliance with Institute standards and guidelines for preparation and study requirements and methodology.

What are the Exam Information?

Exam Format & Duration

Paper 1 Islamic beliefs and practices
Written paper, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks
This paper assesses the prescribed syllabus content for Paper 1.
Candidates answer one compulsory question (Question 1) and one additional question out of a choice of two
(Question 2 or 3).
 

Paper 2 Islamic law (shariah) and its application
Written paper, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks
 

Paper 3 Heritage of Islam
Written paper, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks
This paper assesses the prescribed syllabus content for Paper 3. Candidates are also required to evaluate and
analyse different points of view, providing supporting evidence and a conclusion.
 

Paper 4 Islam in the modern world
Written paper, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks
This paper assesses knowledge and understanding from the prescribed syllabus content for Paper 4.
Candidates are also required to evaluate and analyse differing points of view, providing supporting evidence
and a conclusion. Wider reading of the Qurʾan and Hadith will be credited.
