What is the eligibility?

  • The Solicitors Qualifying Examination Preparation Course is suitable for candidates preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.
  • You do not need a law degree to sit the assessment. However, to qualify as a solicitor, you must have a degree in any subject, an equivalent qualification, or qualifying equivalent experience.
  • Furthermore, candidates must normally pass the first assessment stage before progressing to the practical legal skills assessment.
  • A degree can be in any subject; therefore, graduates from non-law disciplines can follow the solicitor qualification route.
  • In addition, candidates seeking admission as solicitors must complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).
  • Candidates must also meet the SRA's character and suitability requirements before admission.
  • Moreover, qualified lawyers may be eligible to apply for an exemption from certain assessment requirements, although exemptions are subject to the SRA's specific criteria.

What is the Exam Information?

SQE 1

The SQE 1 assessment tests candidates’ functioning legal knowledge through two assessments: FLK1 and FLK2. Furthermore, each assessment contains 180 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions and is completed over two days. In addition, the assessment covers business law, contract, tort, dispute resolution, property, criminal law, trusts and other core legal areas, with ethics and professional conduct assessed throughout. Moreover, each FLK assessment is divided into two sessions. Candidates must pass both FLK1 and FLK2 to pass SQE 1.

  • Format: Computer-based, closed-book assessment with single-best-answer multiple-choice questions.
  • Assessments: FLK1 and FLK2, with 180 questions each.
  • Duration: Each assessment is divided into two sessions of 2 hours 33 minutes.
  • Questions per session: 90 questions.
  • Break: A 60-minute scheduled break between sessions.
  • Assessment days: FLK1 and FLK2 are taken on separate days.

Module 1: FLK1 – Core Legal Foundations

FLK1 is assessed through a computer-based examination consisting of multiple-choice questions designed around real-life legal scenarios. Each question presents five possible answers, requiring candidates to select the single best response based on legal reasoning and practical application.

The FLK1 assessment is completed in two sessions on the same day. Each session contains 90 questions and lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a break in between.

Module 2: FLK2 – Applied Legal Practice Areas

FLK2 follows the same structure as FLK1, using scenario-based multiple-choice questions that test the candidate’s ability to apply legal knowledge in practical situations. The assessment evaluates both technical understanding and decision-making skills required in professional legal practice.

FLK2 is assessed on a separate day, also divided into two sessions of 90 questions each, with each session lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Exam Dates

The SQE 1 assessment is held twice a year, generally in January and July.

  • July 2026: FLK1: 13–17 July 2026; FLK2: 20–24 July 2026
  • January 2027: FLK1: 11–15 January 2027; FLK2: 18–22 January 2027
  • July 2027: FLK1: 12–16 July 2027; FLK2: 19–23 July 2027
  • Important: Booking deadlines and available test-center locations should be checked on the official SRA schedule before registration.

  • Next SQE 1 sitting: January 2027.
  • FLK1: 11–15 January 2027.

  • Seat reservation form: Sent to candidates on 21 September 2026.
  • Seat reservation deadline: 24 September 2026.
  • Booking closing date: To be confirmed (TBC) by the SRA. 
  • Candidates should create their SQE account and complete all required pre-booking steps as early as possible.
Passing Criteria
  • SQE 1 has two assessments: FLK1 and FLK2.
  • Candidates must pass both FLK1 and FLK2 to pass SQE 1. 
  • Each correct answer receives 1 mark, with no negative marking for incorrect answers. 
  • The pass mark for each FLK is set according to the difficulty of that particular assessment, so there is no fixed percentage pass mark. 
  • Results are reported on a scaled score from 0 to 500, with 300 representing the pass mark for each FLK. 
  • For example, in the January 2026 sitting, the passing score was 300 for both FLK1 and FLK2.

  • SQE 1 assessments are conducted at Pearson VUE test centers. 
  • Centers are available across the UK and internationally, although availability varies by assessment window. 
  • UK locations include London, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds-area centers and many other cities. 
  • International locations include cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Mumbai, New Delhi, Singapore, Dublin, Paris, Berlin and others. 
  • The exact test center is selected during booking, and not every location is available for every sitting. 
  • Candidates receive the confirmed assessment-center address and reporting time after booking.
