What is the eligibility?

The eligibility requirements for SHRM certification (SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP) depend on your level of education and professional HR experience. Here's an overview:

 

1. SHRM-CP (Certified Professional) Eligibility:

For those in early- to mid-career HR roles, the requirements are:

  • With a Bachelor's degree or higher:
    • Must have at least 1 year of work experience in an HR role.
  • With a Master’s degree:
    • No HR work experience required, as the advanced degree in HR-related fields counts toward eligibility.
  • Without a Bachelor’s degree:
    • Must have at least 3 years of work experience in an HR role.                                                                                   

2. SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) Eligibility:

For senior-level HR professionals, the requirements are:

  • With a Bachelor's degree or higher:
    • Must have at least 3 years of work experience in an HR role in a strategic capacity.
  • With a Master’s degree:
    • Must have at least 2 years of experience in a senior HR role.
  • Without a Bachelor's degree:
    • Must have at least 6 years of work experience in an HR role at a senior level.

Work experience for SHRM certification typically involves involvement in HR-related activities, such as recruitment, employee relations, compensation and benefits, performance management, or HR strategy. The experience should be in a professional setting where HR practices are being applied.

Computer-Based Testing (CBT) - Questions Types:

  • 50% HR Specific Knowledge: Key concept topics associated with the 15 HR functional areas
  • 40% Situational Judgement: Choose the best strategy to address issues in a given work-related scenario
  • 10% Leadership: Key foundational topics related to the 8 behavioral competencies

The exams are available in two main windows:

You’ll receive a scaled score between 120 and 200. The minimum passing score is typically around 150.

Exam Locations

You can take the SHRM CP and SCP exams in person at an authorized Prometric test center.
