The CPA REG examination consists of 72 MCQs and 8 TBSs completed within 4 hours. Candidates answer 36 MCQs in each of the first two testlets, followed by eight TBSs across three testlets. MCQs and TBSs each account for 50% of the score.

Exam Dates

Taxation and Regulation (REG) is one of the three compulsory Core sections of the CPA Examination. Core sections are available under continuous testing, allowing eligible candidates to schedule exams throughout the year, subject to jurisdictional requirements and Prometric availability.

Passing Criteria

Candidates must achieve a scaled score of 75 or higher on each CPA Examination section. A score of 75 does not mean that exactly 75% of questions were answered correctly, as the CPA Examination uses a scaled scoring methodology.

Important 2026 Tax Update

CPA REG preparation should reflect current testable U.S. federal tax legislation. Under AICPA policy, tax law changes generally become testable six months after the later of their enactment or effective date. For H.R. 1, signed on 4 July 2025, applicable provisions became testable in REG from 1 July 2026, with later provisions phased in according to AICPA policy.

The Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination is available throughout the United States of America and at approved international Prometric testing locations. This provides testing access for eligible candidates in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom and Europe, subject to jurisdictional approval and appointment availability.
